Guatemala’s Volcano Gesha captivates with its intricate floral and fruity notes, offering a truly elevated coffee experience. The dry fragrance greets you with toasted sugars and loose leaf black teas, punctuated by delicate floral hints. As hot water is poured, the aroma intensifies, revealing a sweet backdrop enhanced by lime and the unmistakable jasmine floral note that defines Gesha coffee.
The brewed coffee showcases a sweet, transparent body with floral and herbaceous elements that provide a unique retro-nasal effect while drinking. The flavor profile includes pink bubble gum, star jasmine, and a refreshing herbal-citrus accent reminiscent of sweetened lemongrass tea. As the cup cools, soft fruit flavors like D’anjou pear, guava, and tamarind emerge, accompanied by tannic tea-like notes in the long aftertaste, mingling with hints of spice and citrus.
While we often recommend sticking to light roasts for Gesha to preserve its delicate nuances, this Guatemala Gesha also shines at Full City roast. Here, the body and bittersweet notes become more pronounced, revealing darker fruit notes like black plum and fig, while the floral intensity is subtly reduced. Both roast levels produce an outstanding pour-over brew that highlights the coffee’s complex character.
The Legacy of Gesha in Acatenango
Roasters Realm works with a supplier that has exclusive access to this single estate coffee has allowed them to nurture a longstanding relationship with this exceptional producer. The Acatenango farm, situated on the steep slopes of Volcan Acatenango between 1600 – 1700 meters above sea level, benefits from rich volcanic soil that enhances the coffee’s distinctive qualities. The Gesha cultivar, originally from Ethiopia and popularized in Panama, expresses itself uniquely in Acatenango’s environment, influenced by local weather, soil, and altitude.
The farm has been in the same family for generations and boasts an impressive wet milling facility onsite. Despite a lower harvest this year, we’ve secured all bags of this exquisite Gesha, ensuring our customers continue to enjoy its remarkable qualities.
